Resonai harnessed their digital twin platform to innovate on facility maintenance for commercial properties with an immersive visualization & navigation mobile app.

Resonai XR is a tech start-up working in the digital transformation space to help property owners & managers transform their assets into smart, efficient, and innovative digital ecosystems. The company's enterprise software handles facility maintenance management behind the scenes, while their augmented reality app guides technicians on-site.

Overview

Project Goals

Bringing Clarity & Efficiency to On-site Maintenance Visits

Resonai's digital twin platform can easily model large properties into detailed virtual floor plans while also integrating the massive amount of location-specific data collected minute to minute from online devices like environment sensors, HVAC, lighting, secured entryways and elevators.

A commercial property client of Resonai wanted to help their maintenance technicians navigate large buildings to problem areas faster & access maintenance data without a computer to view the complex data.

Working with the internal platform team at Resonai and an external development agency, I redesigned a prototype into an implementation-ready mobile app to allow for easier on-site visits & data access.

Overview

Challenges

Data Visualization in Mobile Contexts

The vast sensor data captured from buildings had dedicated dashboards on the desktop platform to review & analyze, but viewing it on a compact mobile screen that also integrated with the on-the-go AR visualization of the physical spaces was a big design challenge.

Prioritizing Outliers Not Overviews

The data visualization dashboards provided overviews and filtering by different metrics, but didn’t excel at highlighting outliers in the data, which were most important for technicians to be able to address areas that had sensor readings outside of the acceptable range.

Integrating Multiple Data Types

Beyond the common temperature and air quality sensors, the system also captured data from entry doors, emergency devices, and power consumption, requiring a unified UI for technicians to access all monitoring in one app.

Overview

Solutions

As the sole designer throughout the project, I designed and guided all screen layouts and feature flows, working closely with the business & development teams from concept to implementation.

User Flow 01
Quickly Navigating to a Problem

Accessing a recent Sensor Alert from the home screen allows the user to navigate to the problem without using the AR or Map Views. AR Navigation will direct the user to the sensor’s location so they can interact with the Sensor HUD.

Overview

Outcomes

Bridging the gap between desktop-first data & mobile on-site usability

This app filled a gap between existing technologies,by creating a usable workflow for maintenance technicians. It allowed them to gain insights from large data sets while on-site, enhancing their ability to analyze and remedy device issues.

This project deepened my understanding of data visualization design for small screens and integrating user interfaces within AR contexts. Working as the only designer for the project with a team of developers required a strict attention to detail - ensuring every unit of interface aligned to a grid and design system conventions were upheld in every component to allow for a smooth developer-handoff & clear implementation.
